Badge of Honour: Your Ticketing Platform Now Wants the Lanyards Too

Somewhere at every large event there is a cardboard box marked STAFF, and inside it are four hundred identical laminated badges that also say STAFF. They get handed out at 6am by whoever is holding the clipboard, they end up round the necks of people nobody can name, and by Sunday a dozen of them have quietly migrated into the crowd. It is not really a security breach. It is a filing system with an open door policy.

In the last week of July, Ticketbud decided that box was a product gap. The Austin ticketing platform announced an expanded credentialing suite on 29 July covering credential printing, access control and onsite badge services, then followed up the next day by adding RFID and NFC chips to the mix. Two announcements, forty eight hours, one very clear message: your ticketing platform would now like to handle the lanyards as well.

What Ticketbud actually announced

The credentialing release pulls ticket sales, attendee intake, approval workflows, access permissions, credential printing and onsite support into a single system, according to TicketNews. Organisers can issue and manage credentials for staff, vendors, sponsors, media, talent and VIP guests, and assign access levels that map to specific venues, restricted zones, sponsor activations and tiered VIP areas. Credentials can be printed weeks in advance or produced on demand at the gate. There is an application and approval layer too, so event teams can collect names, photographs, company details, roles and venue assignments, then approve or reject each request before anything gets laminated.

Chief executive Kayhan Ahmadi framed the problem as a plumbing one. Most large events run public ticketing on one platform and staff and production credentials on another, which leaves the access data split across two systems that were never introduced to each other. His blunter observation, reported by TicketNews, is that generic credentials usually get printed en masse in advance and never get assigned to an actual human being.

The RFID and NFC announcement on 30 July is the more interesting half. RFID chips get embedded in wristbands and badges, NFC lets a reader pick them up on a tap or a wave, and Ticketbud says the scanning can run on compatible mobile devices through its own app rather than requiring a rack of dedicated gate hardware. The workflows it describes are pleasingly mundane: sell a ticket online, email a QR code, swap that QR code for an NFC wristband at the gate. Or post chip-embedded credentials out in advance. Or run QR codes for general admission and chips for the people who need to get into the production compound.

The credential is no longer a piece of card you print at the end of the process. It is the last mile of the registration record, and it has been living in a completely different building.

Why onsite badge printing suddenly has a queue of suitors

Ticketbud is not alone in the lanyard aisle this month. On 31 July, Janam Technologies (now part of HID) launched GTX+, a taller entry pedestal built for facial authentication that still reads barcodes, QR codes, Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes and wristbands, per TheTicketingBusiness. Earlier in July, Epson introduced the ColorWorks CW-D3800, a compact colour badge and label printer aimed squarely at visitor management and event check in, as BizBash reported. Three very different companies, one month, all converging on the same forty square centimetres of plastic hanging off an attendee's neck.

That convergence tells you where the margin has moved. Selling a ticket is close to a solved problem and priced accordingly. Getting three thousand people through a door in ninety minutes, with the right ones ending up backstage, is still genuinely hard, and hard things command a premium.

For organisers weighing up onsite badge printing, the practical question is not which chip is cleverest. It is whether the credential knows who the person is. A badge printed from your live registration record carries a name, a company, a ticket type and an access level. A badge printed from a spreadsheet exported on Thursday carries whatever was true on Thursday.

The lanyard industrial complex, briefly explained

Credentialing became a separate industry for a very boring reason: it used to be a manufacturing job. Wristbands needed ordering twelve weeks out from a specialist supplier. Badges needed a print bureau. Access zones lived in a laminated matrix taped to the wall of the production office, maintained by one person who was never available. None of that had anything to do with the software that sold the tickets, so nobody tried to connect the two.

What changed is that the printing got cheap and the chips got cheap, so the value shifted from making the credential to knowing what it means. Once that happens, the company holding the attendee database is in a much stronger position than the company holding the laminator. Ticketbud has noticed. So has everyone else.

Watch this space

Two things worth keeping an eye on. First, pricing shape. Credentialing has traditionally been sold as a project with a quote attached, which sits awkwardly next to platforms that charge per ticket. Watch whether these new suites arrive as included capability or as a separate line item that appears after you have already committed to the ticketing.

Second, data ownership. A credential system that captures photographs, employer details and zone permissions for every member of your production crew is holding rather more sensitive information than a ticket record. Before anyone signs, it is worth asking exactly who controls that data, how long it is retained and what happens to it when the contract ends.

The direction of travel is not really in doubt though. The registration record, the ticket, the check in scan and the credential were always describing the same person. It just took the industry about twenty years to put them in the same sentence.
