French Ligue 2 club Dijon FCO has retired the season ticket card and replaced it with a scarf. An NFC chip sits under an embroidered owl patch, supporters tap it at the entry gates of Stade Gaston Gerard, and the same scarf pays for their drinks inside. It went live for the 2026/27 season, and it is a genuinely useful lesson in credential design.
What Dijon actually built
The club unveiled the connected scarf, named Solo Divio, in June 2026 as part of its season ticket campaign, and supporters used it at the ground for the first time this month. The chip is embedded beneath a small embroidered owl, the club symbol, so the technology is invisible unless you know it is there.
The onboarding path is worth writing down, because it is the part most credential projects get wrong. A supporter buys the season ticket online. An email arrives with a QR code. That code is exchanged for the physical scarf and pairs it with the subscriber account in one step. From then on the scarf is the ticket, scanned at the SKIDATA gates on the way into the 15,500 capacity stadium, and it doubles as a cashless wallet at the concession stands and beer walls. The club worked with ticketing and cashless platform Weezevent to build it, and TheTicketingBusiness reported the rollout after the first match. French regional coverage from France 3 Bourgogne-Franche-Comte described it as a first for a French club.
Setup and ease of use: the credential is the check-in experience
Everything an attendee thinks about your check-in operation happens in the four seconds between reaching the gate and getting through it. Dijon has removed almost every failure point in those four seconds. There is no phone to unlock, no screen brightness to fumble with, no battery to run flat, no wallet pass that mysteriously vanished during an iOS update, and no queue of people asking staff to look them up by surname.
That last one is the quiet win. Manual lookups are what actually destroy a door. One person who cannot find their ticket does not cost you fifteen seconds, it costs you the fifteen seconds plus the compounding delay behind them. A physical token that people are already wearing removes an entire category of that problem, because nobody forgets the thing tied around their neck on the way to the ground.
What this means for event organisers
Conferences and trade shows have been circling the same idea from the opposite direction. The badge is already a physical credential that attendees wear, and adding NFC to it is neither new nor expensive. What Dijon demonstrates is the value of collapsing three separate objects into one: the entry credential, the identity, and the payment method. Every object you remove is an object that can be lost, forgotten, or mis-scanned.
The transferable lessons are less about scarves and more about sequencing:
Pair the credential before the event, not at the door. Dijon's QR-to-scarf handover happens in advance, at leisure, with staff who have time. The gate then does one job only.
Make the credential something people want to keep. A scarf is merchandise. A lanyard is landfill. If the credential has value beyond access, attendees look after it.
Give it a second job. Cashless spend is the obvious one for stadiums. For conferences it is lead capture, session access, or catering entitlements.

The most reliable credential is the one your attendee cannot leave at home, because they are already wearing it.

Chips in textiles have to survive the washing machine, and a season ticket that dies in a hot wash in November is a customer service problem with a very unhappy human attached to it. There is also the replacement question: if a scarf is lost, how fast can it be voided and reissued, and does that happen at the ground on a Saturday or in an office on a Tuesday? Then there is transfer. A scarf is trivially lendable, which is charming for a family and awkward for anyone trying to enforce named tickets or concession eligibility.
Offline reliability matters just as much. Gate hardware needs to keep reading and keep recording when the connection drops, then reconcile afterwards, because the one guarantee of any venue is that the network will misbehave at exactly the wrong moment. If your check-in tooling cannot scan without a signal, the credential technology is irrelevant.
Not the first, and probably not the last
Dijon is not operating alone in this. Swiss club FC St. Gallen 1879 introduced scannable scarves with platform Zatap, where each tap at the entrance also earned supporters badges and points, turning the credential into a loyalty mechanic as well as a key. The direction of travel is clear enough: the credential is becoming a brand object rather than an administrative one.
For business events that shift is arriving through badge design rather than knitwear, but the logic is identical. When the thing an attendee wears carries your branding, your data and your entitlements at once, it stops being a cost line and starts being part of the experience. That is a design decision, not a procurement one, and it belongs on the run sheet a lot earlier than most organisers put it.
Where this leaves your door
You probably should not knit anything. But the underlying question Dijon answered is the one worth borrowing: what is the smallest number of objects an attendee needs to carry, and can you make one of them do all the work? Sort that out and the door gets faster, the queue gets shorter, and your staff spend the morning greeting people instead of searching a list.
