An open day lets prospective students, with a parent or two in tow, see a campus, meet the people who teach there and decide whether to apply. Visitors book in advance for the day and then for timed campus tours, subject talks and accommodation visits, each with limited places. Registration also feeds admissions, so the form asks for the subject of interest and the year of entry. Without booking, the popular subjects overflow, the tour guides spend the day counting heads, and the institution learns very little about who came.

Open day is UK and Irish vocabulary for universities and schools; US colleges say open house, campus visit day or admitted students day. Employers use the same idea for recruitment open days, and a school's open evening is the shorter weekday version.

Visitors can book subject talks in eventcloud as they register, each with its own capacity, and campus tours that repeat every half hour can run as session tickets.
